The Colossi aren’t evil, and as the game wears on, what starts out as a seemingly noble quest begins to become a little more ambiguous. These sequences are thrilling, but what really marks Shadow out is its melancholy tone. But taking on the Colossi themselves is no easy task, and Shadow is as much a puzzle-game as an action game – each Colossus has its own skills and weaknesses, which have to be identified before you can climb their titanic frames and bring them down.

There’s no other enemies to fight, no side quests, and barely any dialogue. It might be the spiritual successor to 2001’s flawed but interesting Ico, but there’s no other game quite like Shadow of the Colossus. This minimalist but involving title sees you trekking across a desolate and oddly beautiful land, hunting down sixteen colossal monsters. The Fall of Max Payne has held up very well over the years, and represents video-gaming pulp fiction at its finest.
